During the last few decades and especially after the emergence of Rauvolfia serpentina as the Wonder Drug of India, there is a steady effort in and outside the country to screen Ayurvedic drugs for their therapeutic values. And in such efforts of evaluation with a definite outlook of finding specificity of drug action, modern pharmacological techniques are being assiduously employed. Of course, according to the philosophy and methodology of modern medicine such techniques have to be employed. But quite pertinently a question may be raised as to whether such techniques are quite exhaustive to substantiate the full scope of therapeutic value of a drug from the Ayurvedic point of view. Modern nail polish is sold in liquid form in small bottles and is applied with a tiny brush. Within a few minutes after application, the substance hardens and forms a shiny coating on the fingernail that is both water- and chip-resistant. Generally, a coating of nail polish may last several days before it begins to chip and fall off. Nail polish can also be removed manually by applying nail polish "remover," a substance designed to break down and dissolve the polish. from certain seaweeds of the Rhodophyceae class. It is insoluble in cold water but soluble in boiling water. A 1.5% solution is clear and when it is cooled to 34-43°C it forms a firm gel which does not melt again below 85°C. It is a mixture of polysaccharides whose basic monomer is galactose. These polysaccharides can be sulphated in very variable degrees but to a lesser degree than in carrageenan. For this reason the ash content is below those of carrageenan, furcelleran (Danish agar) and others. A 5% maximum ash content is acceptable for agar although it is normally maintained between 2.5-4%.

Dietary supplement, any vitamin, mineral, herbal product, or other ingestible preparation that is added to the diet to benefit health.

Omega-3 fatty acid pills are an example of a dietary supplement.

Dietary supplements are used worldwide and represent a broad category of ingestible products that are distinguishable from conventional foods and drugs. In the United States, dietary supplements are defined as products (other than tobacco) intended to supplement the diet that contain at least one of the following ingredients: vitamin, mineral, herb or botanical (including extracts of herbs or botanicals), amino acid, metabolite, or any combination thereof. In short, products such as multivitamins, garlic tablets, fish oil capsules, probiotics, natural weight-loss aids, and certain types of energy drinks are examples of dietary supplements.

Nutritional supplement, in foods, any vitamin or mineral added during processing to improve nutritive value and sometimes to provide specific nutrients in which populations are deficient. Flour and bread products are often enriched with iron and the B vitamins thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin; and citrus-fruit beverages, naturally containing vitamin C, may be fortified with additional vitamin C units. Addition of iodine to salt has eliminated goitre in some areas in which it was formerly common; and vitamin D may be added to baby foods to combat rickets.

Ayurvedic medicines are based on plants, animals extract and minerals both in single ingredient drugs and compound formulations, however, Ayurveda does not rule out any substances from being used as a potential source of medicine.
Ayurvedic compound formulations are mainly divided into two groups viz. (1) Kasthausadhi (predominantly plant drugs) and (2). Rasausadhi (predominantly metals and minerals).
There are several categories of Kasthausadhi formulations such as Asavaristra, Avleha, Grafa Churena,Taila etc. and of Rasausadhis such as Bhasma, Pisti, Lauha, Kapibadkva, Rasayana etc.

Castor oil is derived form the bean of the castor  plant, Ricinus  Communis  L., of the family Eurphorbiaceae.  The  castor plant   occurs  in  practically  all  tropical  and   subtropical countries,  either wild or cultivated. It is also found widly  as both an ornamental and cultivated plant in temperate zones where, because it is frost sensitive, it is grown annually from seed. It is  a highly heterogeneous species, with wide variations  in  the size, form, and color of the plant, as well as the size and color of  the  seed,  and  the dehiscence of  the  capsules.  There is relatively little variation in the oil content of fully  matured seeds  and in the chemical composition of the oil. The seeds are toxic and the ingestion of even on seed can be fatal to humans.
